Channel your own “Château” de Versailles lifestyle with these French country bedroom decor ideas.
The French speaker in me was delighted to write this article to pay homage to my francophone upbringing. Sharing with you the secrets of a fabulous French country decor (on a budget) was something I was looking forward to.
Marie Antoinette may probably have enjoyed the epitome of extravagant luxury in the spectacular palace of Versailles when married to French king Louis XVI in the 18th century.
However, while I am fond of Versailles classicism, I prefer a modern twist of French country furnishings with fewer ornaments and cleaner lines better suited to modern day living.
I therefore invite you to explore these updated versions of French country bedroom furnishings, and adapt them to reflect your own personality and home décor style.
From the quintessential French bed to hotel-chic bed linen, and fabulous mirrors, all of which exuding timeless elegance, it’s time to luxuriate your bedroom, the French country way.

THE FRENCH BED
There is no French country bedroom decor without the French bed. Hand-pick the right one that will best fit in your bedroom and the design aesthetics you are seeking to achieve.
French beds tend to distinguish themselves by the sometimes curvy subtle hand carved detailing of the bed outer frame that gives the bed a luxurious and opulent feel. Many of them have a subtle hand-distressed appearance that gives them an air of antique appeal.
Modern interpretations of French beds are available in different materials, textures, and finishes which help express individuality to enhance a variety of décors.
Be it an elegant upholstered bed, hand-carved sleigh style or a beautiful antique furniture piece, there is something for everyone.
Choose the finish that is most appealing to you, from neutral wood and rattan blend to shabby chic off-white paints, vintage greys, weathered wood, or beached timber.
THE FRENCH BED LINEN
White is a classic choice for French bed linen. But, you can always add interest with a subtle border or prettily scalloped edges.
Make French bed linen neutrals cosy and inviting by layering different tones and textures with warm accents. White, black grey, beige, and cream alongside champagne and earthy hues have an elegant timeless appeal that brings 5-star hotel luxury straight into your bedroom.
For those in love with brighter hues, softer blue, green, pink, or burgundy paired with white and light grey accent pieces can achieve an eye catchy room aesthetics.
Infuse complementary colours and textures with some beautiful cushions and French decorative pillows, many of which have embroidery detailing. Remember you can never have enough cushions!
THROW BLANKETS AND QUILTS
Invest in elegant and soft-to-the touch throw blankets with a luxurious feel. Fine linen quilts, faux fur, cashmere throws, woolen throws, shearling or fleece throw blankets will add interesting layers and warmth into your French country bedroom decor.
Opt for classic patterned and printed throw blankets and quilts in velvet, jacquard, herringbone, tartan, check, brushed, or hand woven tufted tassel designs.
These are investment pieces that you can keep for a long time. Use trendy patterns such as soft animal prints for accent pieces that you can easily swap during the year.
Consider anthracite or soft greys, white, cream, warm blues, navy, green, and purple when picking your bedroom throw blankets and quilts.
THE FRENCH WARDROBE
Pair your French country bed with a French wardrobe to add that touch of vintage feel into your bedroom. They make beautiful display cabinets and add grandeur and style to your space, whilst providing ample storage for your coats, jackets, shoes and boots.
If your bedroom is not the right place for a French armoire, consider adding it as an antiqued piece to the kitchen, a hallway or a bathroom. A French wardrobe in either of these rooms, would look more like a well cared for piece of furniture that has been handed down to you by your grandmother or a beloved relative.
THE FRENCH MIRROR
The über glamorous French mirror is an absolute must-have to finish off your French country bedroom decor with elegance and sophistication.
A full length mirror will help enlarge and brighten your interior space, whilst giving it a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere. Choose a beautiful ornate french style mirror to help bounce the light around your room.
Pick a mirror in gorgeous matte black or from a range of metallic finishes or colour paints. Antique gold or shabby chic colour paints are all about timeless elegance.
A French mirror will add character and life to any wall, and its gently curved lines and light crackle finish will complement traditional and contemporary decors.
THE FRENCH ACCENT CHAIR
If you have a large space, adding a comfortable French accent chair into your bedroom will beautifully complement your room decor by providing you with another seating area.
Depending on the style you opt for, use your French accent chair as a desk chair to read and write or pamper yourself, or throw your clothes there when you are getting dressed.
Mix new and old pieces in your French country bedroom decor. I suggest keeping it to no more than three French style furniture pieces and decor accessories for your bedroom, especially if you are dealing with a small footprint.
Too much antique and vintage pieces can make your space look dated. And far too many contemporary furnishings appear sterile and devoid of warmth.
Contemporary pieces cleverly mixed with your old style French bedroom decor furniture items will bring character and an inviting atmosphere into your bedroom.
Lastly, choose quality over quantity. Always invest in the best pieces of furniture you can afford to ensure they last longer and move with you through times.
