Creating a calming home environment with welcoming vibes is no easy fit. The choice of colour palettes, textures, materials, home design features, and accessories all need to work well together to tell a cohesive and unique story of the homeowners.
For fashion journalist turned interior designer, Josh Greene, all projects are approached with the same level of warmth, ingenuity, and attention to details.
This is the same spirit he, together with his team at Josh Greene Design, brought to their recent collaboration with fashion designer Joseph Altuzzara and his family to breathe life into their Hamptons getaway home. The “black barn” retreat, nestled in a secluded spot of greenery, calls for relaxation and effortlessly chic living.

The exterior of Altuzzara’s Hamptons home with its wooden and steel A-shaped architecture and pared down aesthetics beautifully bring together modern farmhouse decor and modernist influences. The deliberate minimalist design approach to the home architecture with black framed floor-to-ceiling windows helps to anchor the home in its Water Mill farmland and allows it to bring tons of natural light inside the home.
The intentionally subtle architectural details of the house allows for the surrounding plants, trees, and flowers to cocoon the house, enabling it to become an integral part of its natural environment.
The living room in off-white hues is brought to life by subtle shades of pink on the floor carpet, wall art, the Rogan Gregory sculptural mirror above the fireplace, and a superb velvet pink Dmitriy & Co sofa. The textured accent chairs and pouffes in soft cream add calming tones to the space, and they help connect all interior pieces together.
The dining room is another celebration of minimalism and modern design influences at their finest. The most striking decor item in the room is the beautiful assortment of off-white bottle vases of different shapes and sizes from Sara Paloma that are true art pieces in themselves.
They soften the space ,whilst creating soothing yet captivating decorative objects on which to rest the eyes. The round dining table, together with the flooring in almost identical light wood tones, help balance and warm up the dining room, creating an inviting atmosphere.
In keeping with warm minimalist and modern farmhouse design aesthetics, the off-white kitchen cabinetry is fairly streamlined with just enough open shelving to display a few beautiful kitchen bowls and dinnerware set to add visual interest to the space. The kitchen light grey backsplash displays a beautiful veining that pairs well with the kitchen cabinets and large kitchen island in complementary white hues.
The black framed floor-to-ceiling kitchen windows and doors add contrast to the room off-white hues, helping to bring the outdoors inside. To complement the kitchen’s timeless design look, a large rustic Restoration Hardware (RH) kitchen table, paired with modernist Hans Wegner wishbone chair in natural light wood, elevates the room for relaxed eating.
In one of the guest bedrooms, with hints of boho bedroom decor vibes, a black canopy bed accessorised with a beautiful patchwork duvet cover takes centre stage. The bedroom floor is adorned with an off-white rug with subtle black stripes and tassels that adds to effortlessly chic living. A comfortable off-white curvaceous chair with a wooden footstool provides that little corner for reading a book, listening to music , or simply chilling out.
Adjacent to the accent chair, a stunning painting with vibrant hues is on display, which adds another layer of textures and pops of colour to the refined room style. The black framed floor-to-ceiling doors are covered with beautiful blackout curtains in blush pink, adding a subtle feminine touch to the room.
The family room is an oasis of off-white, cream, ivory, and greige materials and textures that remains welcoming in spite of its sophisticated neutral colour palette. A RH sectional sofa in greige linen hue accessorised with complementary throw pillows helps set the scene. Above the sofa, two striking nature inspired photographs display people in dark brown and cream shearling type head coverings next to a pond surrounded by nature.
A large travertine-like coffee table with two flexible side tables act as a focal point in the family room. A beautiful display of greenery in a veined marble vase helps to bring the surrounding greenery inside. As an ode to Moroccan decor style, a handwoven off-white Beni Ourain rug with subtle black lines envelop the family room floor.
Two inviting shearling like accent chairs in off-white add another layer of textures and visual interest to the family room, pairing well with the photographs above the sectional sofa. The off-white window curtains against black framed windows help maintain a cohesive airy feel in the family room.
In the primary bedroom, the colour palette and furnishings have intentionally been kept to the absolute minimum to allow body and mind to easily transition to sleep. The warm minimalist tones of the sumptuous modernist beige bed and duvet cover are elevated by two stunning off-white sculptural desk lamps that beautifully lay on bedside tables in a warm wood shade.
The small seating bench in front of the bed exudes Japandi style, courtesy of its very streamlined yet sophisticated shape in a wood tone that perfectly mimics the bed frame’s natural wood shade. A soft off-white rug cocoons the room with a calming vibe, making it ready for blissful relaxation.
In one of the Hamptons home’s bathrooms, a beautiful display of calacatta marble from the floor to the wall mid-length conveys a striking look to the wetroom. The bathroom vanity sink is made in the same striking looking marble that works beautifully with a streamlined cupboard unit in natural wood tones.
The bathroom tub triumphantly sits opposite a large black framed window, showcasing the relaxing green surroundings from the farmland. A soft linen fabric serves as a window treatment that lends adequate privacy to bathroom users whenever needed.
In the powder room, another imposing calacatta marble sink adds glamour to the tiny space. Handmade Moroccan zellige tiles in a subtle grey hue serve as a backdrop to the curvaceous sink mirror, adding more texture to the room. Two black wall sconces, flanked on either side of the sink mirror, add minimalist elegance to the powder room.
In one of Joseph Altuzarra’s Hamptons home offices in subtle grey and ivory shades, the prominent sofa with its light grey stripes is subtly evocative of coastal decor.
The same casual relaxing seashore interior style has inspired the decor of another bedroom, where a blue striped headboard, a throw pillow, and a window fabric blind elevate the room. A gorgeous bed quilts displaying different motifs and shades of sea blue on a white background superbly complement the bedroom decor.
